Materials:
Pinecones
Lard (use a blend-see below)
Birdseed
Popcorn
String
Directions:
Roll the pinecone in lard, then in birdseed or popcorn.
Attach a string long enough so that the pinecones can hang from a tree branch. Find a tree that you can see easily, hang your feeder there and watch the birds come.
NOTE:
Using a blend instead of straight peanut butter or lard.
It is recommend by the forestry service to mix cornmeal and lard (melted suet or shortening) in with the peanut butter before applying to the pinecones.
Straight peanut butter can be strangling to small birds -- they cannot get it off their beaks and it becomes like glue.
Add just enough of each to stiffen the consistency; apply to the pinecones; roll in birdseeds. Let set overnight to harden. Then hang out.
There is nothing in which the birds differ more from man than the way in which they can build and yet leave a landscape as it was before.

January is usually the coldest month of the year, so it's important to keep bird feeders filled. Just as important is to provide a supply of fresh water. Small hanging trays are available that can easily be emptied of ice daily and refilled. There are also small heated birdbaths available, as well as heaters that can be placed in birdbaths. These are inexpensive to operate and will draw many more birds to your feeders.
