I'm a Carnie Brat!
And Proud Of It!
Back in 1959 My mom married Rick Jackson, the owner of a carnival and I became a carnie brat. We lived with the carnival until 1963 when I had to start school. Some of my best memories are of those years with the carnival.
I remember the big tent that all the families gathered into at dinner time. Everyone brough food and it was like an "all you can eat" restaurant, so many wonderful foods to choose from.
We were like a huge family and everyone watched each others children. So I had a lot of fun riding as many rides as often as I wanted. Mom told me I could ride as much as I wanted as long as I only used the kiddy rides. One day she came looking for me and found me riding a huge roller coaster. Scared the witts out of her until one of the crew told her that I had been riding the big rides all along. But that they all watched over me closely.
I'm 46 years old now and to this day I can still remember the lights, the music and the smell of food. Every time I visit a carnival or fair I feel right at home. I also remember going to sleep in one state or town and waking up in another. Mom and I loved all the traveling.
I'll be adding more memories as they come to me. Keep checking back to see what's new.
