Crockpot Hot Cocoa for a Group
1-1/2 cups sugar
1-1/4 cups cocoa powder
1-1/4 teaspoons salt
3/4 cup hot water
1 gallon milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
In large saucepan, combine sugar, cocoa and salt. Add hot water slowly, mixing well. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture boils.
Boil and stir 2 minutes. Add milk. Heat to serving temperature, stirring occasionally. DO NOT boil. Remove from heat. Add vanilla, cinnamon if desired, and whip with a whisk. Serve hot, with whipped cream or marshmallows if desired. Note: This recipe can be doubled and kept in crockpot for easier serving to large groups.
"The whole Mediterranean, the sculpture, the palm, the gold beads, the bearded heroes, the wine, the ideas, the ships, the moonlight, the winged gorgons, the bronze men, the philosophers - all of it seems to rise in the sour, pungent taste of these black olives between the teeth. A taste older than meat, older than wine. A taste as old as cold water."
Lawrence Durrell (1912-1990)
A 'Berliner' or Berlin doughnut is a jelly filled yeast doughnut that Berlin has been famous for dating back to at least the early 1800s. I have not been able to find any specific information as to exactly when 'Bismark' became used as a name for this doughnut, but since Bismark was the architect and first chancellor (1871-90) of the German Empire, and Berlin was the capital of united Germany it is an easy step from 'Berliner' to 'Bismark', since Bismark was Germany.
